Virginia Overton’s work references American minimalism. She uses predominantly found objects, and her method of arranging them supports the intuitive recording of her environment, its material consistency and its architectural characteristics. Stabilizing elements are manipulated and tested to their limits. As a juxtaposition to such a concentration of material and force, the elements themselves are altered in the most rudimentary way. The pickup truck has been a recurring object in Overton’s work. The vehicle references working-class America and is itself a modern-day workhorse, assisting the artist in gathering and transporting found materials for her works. In Truck, the vehicle is drained and dismantled, and all parts are packed into itself to become a carefully balanced assemblage. Through the considered placement of each part, new forms and gestures jumble all that is normally recognizable, creating a visual puzzle for the viewer.
