“An Inch of Time; An Inch of Gold” is Morgan Wong’s latest work continues with Wong’s concern in the irrepressibility of time as a predicament. The installation includes two major elements: blinking LED texts and absurdly proportioned cheaply-made gold-plated wristwatches. The text “An inch of time for an inch of gold” comes from a Chinese proverb regarding the immaterial nature of time and its value surpassing materiality. Wong’s trial of stopping time by pouring concrete in watch-face is obviously a wasted effort. The larger-than-life watches speak contrarily on the materiality of time. One piece of real gold is buried in one of the watches, but we cannot tell where the gold is just as we do not know where time is.
