This panel will discuss issues concerning artists from major continents considered peripheral to the art market, and the range of decisions required to survive. How do artists in these regions build recognition for their work, at home and abroad? What are the trials and tribulations from the perspectives of both an artist who has left her/his country of origin and an artist who has stayed? What is the significance of pursuing art education and exhibition opportunities away from their homeland, and what are the ramifications of each possibility, for the artist as well as the art communities from which they hail?

Candice Breitz, Artist, Berlin; Zanele Muholi, Artist and Visual Activist, Johannesburg.

Moderator: Valerie Kabov, Editor-at-Large, Art Africa Magazine, Harare.
