BMW Art Journey

By enabling the winning artist to go on their own journey of creative discovery, the BMW Art Journey functions as a mobile studio that can take artists almost anywhere in the world – to develop new ideas, discover new themes, and envision new creative projects. Artists accepted into the Discoveries sector at our Hong Kong show, and the Positions sector in Miami Beach are eligible.

BMW Art Journey winner Jamal Cyrus

Art Basel and BMW are delighted to present Jamal Cyrus, represented by Inman Gallery, Houston, Texas, as the sixth BMW Art Journey winner. His winning project titled STANDARDZENBLŪZ II rewrites history in disparate forms unified by a central theme of African-American identity and culture, calling particular attention to its contributions to American society. Cyrus describes his project as ‘an intercontinental and multinational geography describing the circulation of ideas between Africa, Europe, and the Americas.’

Cyrus will build on his exploration of the merging of diverse cultures and the results of such interplay by traveling to major cultural centers in Ghana, France, London, Spain, and the United States where he will interview artists, musicians, historians, and philosophers engaged in the Afro-Atlantic creative traditions, culminating in what he describes as ‘a transformational process involving travel, dialogue, collective imagination and intuitive response that will allow new ideas to surface in my work.’
