“My studio is close to the Military Hospital in Bogotá, and I often see former combatants struggling up there on crutches,
in general, from the lower leves of society, victims like many others of this war between the “two Colombias”.
… Jose Antonio – the soldier and the model for David- told me his story, and collaborated with other projects which
arose during the process, and which I discarded, because I decided to record his body incomplete, a tragic lack of completeness
rather than an erotic one. I asked him to take off his clothes, and discovered that his body was completely
classical, so much that he reminded me of the Michelangelo´s David. I was astounded to find out that he had no idea of
what or who that David was, and at that moment, I realized that he was going along the same road which made reflect
on the great differences of culture which divide our country, and conclude that education is fundamental in the solution
of this conflict.”
