Gianni Colombo’s environments break down the borderlines of contemplation and static observation, plunging us into a transformed space. From 1964 to 1992, his environments introduced perceptive functions involving the kinetics of the body and states of balance. In Spazio curvo, the environment consists of curved shapes suspended in the void. A circular fluorescent tube, connected by nylon threads to an electric motor, spins and floats in darkness, while an ultraviolet light reveals its asynchronous movement. The physical presence of the thin plastic tubing appears to be weightless, as though immersed in a place without gravity. Our ordinary perception of the architectural space is altered and we are gradually caught up in a fluid, enveloping dimension.
