Sergej Jensen subverts the traditional painting vocabulary appropriating all kinds of textiles. The artist approaches the surface as a construction – and deconstruction – site in which stains and imperfections may at times allude to maps and landscapes, challenging painting’s methods, materials and canons, and offering a defiant, rigorous and elegant interpretation of what can be done in the field today. For his most recent works, such as Chanel Strip (2019), the artist explores the contrast between high and low quality materials in a process that results in extremely subtle abstract compositions.
Sergej Jensen lives and works in New York. Recent solo shows include: Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, (Baden-Baden, 2017); Statens Museum for Kunst (Copenhagen, 2016); Berlinische Galerie (Berlin, 2013); and MoMA P.S.1 (New York, 2011). His work is part of the collections of: MoMA and Guggenheim Museum (New York); Tate Modern (London); Fondation Beyeler (Basel); Hammer Museum and MoCA (Los Angeles); Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris).
