Cultural Institutions

Hong Kong&rsquo;s museums and cultural institutions offer a diverse range of possibilities, from Modern and contemporary art to Chinese calligraphy and tea ware. Together with prominent international and local art galleries, these institutions shape the modern cultural landscape of the city. Newly launched in 2026, Friends of Art Basel Hong Kong is a new initiative which expands our relationship to regional institutions.

1a space, founded in 1998, is an independent, non-profit contemporary art space founded by a collective of Hong Kong artists. 1a space aims to promote the making, experimentation, exchange, and dissemination of contemporary art in Hong Kong and the international arena. It has produced multifaceted exhibitions and activities and has been active in international exchanges, cultural festivals, participatory community art, art education, and publication.

1a space

Asia Art Archive is an independent non-profit organisation co-founded by Claire Hsu and Johnson Chang in 2000 in response to the urgent need to document and make accessible the multiple recent histories of art in the region. With one of the most valuable growing collections of material on the recent history of art from Asia, freely available from their website and onsite library, AAA builds tools and communities to collectively expand knowledge through research, residency, educational programmes, and publications.

Asia Art Archive

Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) is an independent non-governmental educational organization established in 1990. As part of Asia Society&rsquo;s global network, with centers in New York, Japan, Switzerland and more, its mission is to navigate shared futures for Asia and the world in the fields of arts and culture, business and policy. Since 2012, ASHK has been situated at the Former Explosives Magazine of the Victoria Barracks, a site steeped in history, cultural significance, and natural beauty. ASHK&rsquo;s Chantal Miller Gallery, which is free for public entry, hosts three to four world-class exhibitions every year. These exhibitions are complemented by multifaceted programs such as talks, workshops, and guided tours, which not only highlight artistic talents but also provide a creative platform for art enthusiasts to share knowledge and appreciation.

Asia Society Hong Kong Center

Asian Cultural Council Hong Kong is a partner foundation of Asian Cultural Council (ACC) Inc. founded by J D Rockefeller 3rd in 1963. The ACC began its Hong Kong program and ACC Hong Kong Friends&rsquo; Committee in 1986 with the help of Kenneth H.C. Fung and J. S. Lee. Today, ACC is headquartered in New York with its regional office in Tokyo and partner foundations in Hong Kong, Manila and Taipei. ACC Hong Kong oversees the ACC fellowship program principally in Hong Kong, as well as other regions in China and Asia.

Asian Cultural Council

CHAT is a textile culture museum in Hong Kong that weaves together heritage, art and community. Located on 2/F of The Mills, the former cotton spinning factory of Nan Fung Textiles in Tsuen Wan, CHAT first opened its doors in 2019 and has been offering exhibitions, co-learning programmes, research support and more &ndash; to spark conversations, to break barriers, to inspire talent, to grow with the community.

CHAT (Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile)

Design Trust was established in 2014 by Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design, a registered charity in Hong Kong since 2007, as a grant funding and community platform. Design Trust supports creative projects that develop expertise, build research initiatives and content related to Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. Working across a multiplicity of design disciplines from graphics, media, architecture to the built environment, Design Trust aims to actively accelerate creative research, design and development of meaningful projects that advocate for the positive role of design.

Design Trust

First Initiative Foundation (FIF) supports and proactively creates local and global initiatives to bring meaningful connection, empowerment and joy to all through the arts in life. Founded as a registered charity in 2010, FIF&rsquo;s initiatives benefit the arts, music, education, mentorship, performance, community outreach and heritage.
FIF is committed to creating original and groundbreaking charitable programmes that connect the best of Hong Kong to the world and the best of the world to Hong Kong. A remarkable supporting membership of world-famous artists, scholars, museums, institutions, talents, cultural and business leaders contributes to FIF initiatives and impact. Current initiatives include scholarships, Masterclasses, artist development and in-residence programmes, concerts, educational museum exhibitions, personal development sharing seminars and workshops.

First Initiative Foundation

HASS Lab is an art collective founded in 2022 by visual artist Pak Sheung Chuen and cultural producer Cherry Chan. The team comprises diverse artists and cross-disciplinary producers dedicated to exploring the role of art in everyday life. Collaborating with educators, social workers, and community organizations, HASS Lab aims to unlock various possibilities for artistic intervention in society, advocating artistic thinking as a way of understanding and improving society.
The collective believes that every individual possesses inherent creative instincts, which often manifest more directly in marginalized communities. By observing, organizing, and showcasing these creative expressions, HASS Lab seeks to challenge and transform societal perceptions through art, and ultimately the value of art.

HASS Lab

Hong Chi Association is one of Hong Kong&rsquo;s leading non-profit organizations supporting people with intellectual disabilities (PIDs) and their families, promoting development, independence and inclusion.
The Hong Chi Sports and Arts Academy provides a cross-disciplinary and territory-wide platform to nurture the talents of PIDs through arts, cultural and sports activities. Emphasising the transformative power of arts and culture, the Academy encourages creativity, emotional expression and confidence, while broadening exposure and enhancing holistic well being.

Hong Chi Association

Founded in 2012, the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association is a member-based non-profit organisation of established art galleries in Hong Kong. With over 60 art galleries as members, their mission is to advance the Hong Kong art gallery community by providing one voice to its members, reaching out to the local and international art community, and helping deepen market knowledge and best practices amongst its members.

Hong Kong Art Gallery Association

Since 1977, the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) has been a platform for nurturing and supporting artists, and infusing art into everyday life. Established more than four decades ago, the HKAC bring art to the people of Hong Kong &ndash; by presenting programmes for visual arts, performing arts, moving images and media arts, comics and animation. Other areas also cover arts education, conferences, festivals, public art and community projects, all done with the vision and mission of engaging and inspiring creativity in the Hong Kong community.

Hong Kong Arts Centre

Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) stands out as a dynamic Hong Kong cultural ambassador, sharing its unique repertoire and style with audiences in Europe, North America, Chinese Mainland and Asia. With over 50 international tours since its founding, last year HKB performed or presented immersive works in Singapore, Venice, New York, London, Seoul and Shanghai. HKB has won recognition both regionally and internationally. In 2024, Septime Webre&rsquo;s &lsquo;The Nutcracker &ndash; A Hong Kong Adventure&rsquo; and its community outreach activities won the Star of Outstanding Award at UNESCO&rsquo;s Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases. HKB maintains the Hong Kong Academy of Ballet, a professionally-oriented ballet school, as well as a full schedule of award-winning community programmes and crossover collaborations throughout Hong Kong to ensure ballet is accessible to all. HKB has also produced engaging original videos and dance films that have collectively garnered over 10 million views online, connecting with ballet lovers worldwide.

Hong Kong Ballet

Converted from the "Shek Kip Mei Factory Building" built in 1977, Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC) is Hong Kong's only vertical art village, combining nostalgic features with avant-garde vitality. It houses over a hundred artist studios and welcomes visitors to explore exhibitions, workshops, guided tours, and experimental theatre. As a self-financed registered charity, JCCAC supports artists' development and promotes appreciation of the arts.

Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC)

Founded in early 1996 as an artist run space, Para Site is Hong Kong&rsquo;s leading contemporary art centre and one of the oldest and most active independent art institutions in Asia. It produces exhibitions, publications, discursive, and educational projects aimed at forging a critical understanding of local and international phenomena in art and society. Since 2012, Para Site has been running an International Art Residency Programme and has been organizing an annual international conference. This is accompanied, starting from 2015, by a new educational format aimed at training young curators and other art professionals.

The Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has a long history for creative talent building since 2005. Our alumni have attained significant achievements with contributions to the art scene, locally and internationally.

The Academy of Visual Arts (AVA), Hong Kong Baptist University

Opened in 1971,&nbsp;The Art Museum of CUHK advances object-based scholarship to illuminate the development of Chinese civilization for a global audience. Through its collections, exhibitions, publications, outreach, and educational programmes, the Museum aims to enrich the cultural experiences of the community and help realise the goals of the University. With the inauguration of Lo Kwee Seong Pavilion in March 2025, an extension of the Art Museum and a new landmark on campus, we will enhance the integration of &nbsp;art-making, curating, and teaching, while diversifying and enriching the museum experience for a broader audience.

The Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Tomorrow Maybe opened in late-2018 with a programme of exhibtions that takes Hong Kong as its starting point. Located in Eaton HK, a new hospitality company that marries social change with contemporary culture, Tomorrow Maybe offers a lens into the city for first time visitors and at the same time proposes nuanced readings into the familiar for those who have an intimate relationship to Hong Kong. Projects include new commissions by artists based in Hong Kong, works by international artists providing counterpoint perspectives into the city and group shows by young curators.

Tomorrow Maybe

Founded in 1953, the University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) of The University of Hong Kong is the oldest continuously operated museum in Hong Kong. Its collection includes over two thousand artworks representing a broad range of cultures, styles and craftsmanship from Chinese antiquity to the present day. As a teaching museum, we uphold the mission of education for both students and public through organising exhibitions and education programmes, as well as teaching of Chinese art and museum studies.

Tai Kwun Contemporary

Videotage is a leading Hong Kong-based non-profit organization specializing in the promotion, presentation, creation, and preservation of moving images and media art across all languages, shapes and forms. Founded in 1986, Videotage has evolved from an artist-run collective to an influential network, supporting the creative use of media art to explore, investigate and connect with issues that are of significant technological, social, cultural, and historical value.

He Art Museum (HEM) is a private non-profit museum located in Shunde in China&rsquo;s Guangdong Province. Designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, the museum focuses on modern and contemporary art and culture with an international scope. Since its establishment in 2020, HEM has been dedicated to integrating art into the local community and highlighting the heritage and culture of its home region on the global stage.

He Art Museum

Inaugurated in 2010, the Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) is a non-profit arts organization in Shanghai. Located in the former Royal Asiatic Society building, which housed one of China&rsquo;s first modern museums, the historical site has been converted into a contemporary arts space with interiors designed by renowned architect David Chipperfield. Dedicated to the promotion and exchange of contemporary art practices, RAM aims to cultivate deep-rooted connections to audiences, artists, scholars, and communities across cultures through its diverse program of exhibitions, research projects, and educational initiatives.
