For Encounters, he offers us a conceptual provocation with a new sculptural installation: an ambiguous topographical form composed of shredded decommissioned Euros. We are reminded of the Dada artists who worked with and subverted money within their practices. Here, the artist further relegates these banknotes to detritus, in a destructive yet regenerative act. He excavates the inequalities that exist within our economic systems and structures of power, as well as the inequitable distribution of wealth and access within our capitalist society. Through this radical transformation, the artist seems to centralize the problematic underpinnings of labor within the economic terrain. He asks us: ‘what does capital look like, what is it that we value, and how do we expend that value?’

Carlos Aires is a multidisciplinary artist internationally recognized for his cynical vision of today's society and his research into the representations of power. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in fine arts at the University of Granada in Spain and completed his postgraduate studies at Fontys Academy (Tilburg), HISK (Antwerp) and Ohio State University (Columbus).

《Like Tears In The Rain》
2023
