Lionel Sabatté—a finalist for the 2025 Marcel Duchamp Prize—explores how living things transform over time, working with materials like dust, metal, and volcanic stone. Birds recur throughout Sabatté’s practice—they interest him as the last living descendants of dinosaurs, witnesses to an extremely ancient evolutionary history. In Champs d’oiseaux, a flock of birds sits atop tall columns, creating a sense of precarious balance. Their verticality echoes a theme in Sabatté’s recent work: figures moving from the ground and upward toward the sky. Clustered together, the birds appear to be in mid-migration—resting here for a moment, but ready to lift off again.
