Activating environments: New ways of thinking of land, sea, and life

What does it mean to map a ‘home’ territory in a world crosshatched with the traces of migration and resource exploitation, and shaped by binary or linear thought? What is the role of the feminine or queer in such an artistic practice? Join two artists whose works explore identity, community, ritual, and rematriation in a discussion that considers better futures for our land, our water, and all its creatures. 
Seba Calfuqueo is a Mapuche trans artist. She lives and works in Santiago, Chile. Throughout her work, Calfuqueo uses her cultural heritage and lived experience as a starting point to propose a critical reflection on the social, cultural, and political dynamics of the Mapuche subject within contemporary Chilean society and Latin America. Her practice spans performance, installation, ceramics, and video. She is participating in the 2024 editions of the Venice Biennale and the Whitney Biennial. 
Stephanie Comilang is an artist living and working in Berlin. Her documentary-based works create narratives that look at how our understanding of mobility, capital, and labor are shaped through various cultural and social factors. Her work has been shown at Tate Modern, London; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Tai Kwun, Hong Kong; International Film Festival Rotterdam; Julia Stoschek Collection, Berlin; and Haus der Kunst, Munich. She was awarded the 2019 Sobey Art Award, Canada’s most prestigious art prize for artists aged 40 years and younger.
Senam Okudzeto, PhD, is an artist, educator, and occasional curator who works on ‘counter-histories’. Her paintings, social sculptures, installations, writing, and research, recover overlooked relics of material culture, with sub-themes such as ‘economics as archive of social relations’ and ‘readings of Lacan in relation to race, performance, and the gendered body.’ Okudzeto is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome (2016), the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University (2004), and winner of the Paul Boesch Art Prize (2023).
