The Political Economy of NFTs

This roundtable brings together artists who have engaged with the NFT phenomenon as a form of political critique. Khaled Jarrar’s 2021 work, If I don’t steal your home, someone else will steal it, presented an NFT accompanied by a physical jar of Palestinian soil. Dread Scott’s NFT White Male for Sale, 2021, a video of a white male on an auction block, whose auction with Christie’s was part of the conceptual project and completed the NFT. Aaajiao, who has explored cryptocurrency from the perspective of extraction, offered an NFT for sale with a password that anyone can find. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. You Mi, Professor of Art and Economies at University of Kassel / documenta Institut, Kassel.&nbsp; Aaajiao, Artist, Shanghai and Berlin Khaled Jarrar, Artist, Ramallah Dread Scott, Artist, Brooklyn Moderator: Mi You, Professor of Art and Economies, University of Kassel / documenta Institut, Kassel Active online as a media artist, blogger, activist and programmer, Aaajiao is the virtual persona of Shanghai- and Berlin- artist Xu Wenkai. Born in 1984&mdash;the title of George Orwell’s classic allegorical novel&mdash; and in one of China’s oldest cities, Xi’an, Aaajiao’s art and works are marked by a strong dystopian awareness, literati spirits and sophistication. Many of Aaajiao’s works speak to new thinkings, controversies and phenomenon around the Internet, with specific projects focusing on the processing of data, the blogsphere and China’s Great Fire Wall. Aaajiao’s recent projects extend his practice to various disciplines (among them, architecture, topography, and design) to capture the pulse of the young generation consuming cyber technology and living in social media. Dread Scott is an interdisciplinary artist who’s art encourages viewers to re-examine ideals of American society. In 1989, the US Senate outlawed his artwork and President Bush declared it “disgraceful” because of its transgressive use of the American flag. His work has been exhibited at The Whiteny Museum, MoMA/PS1, The Walker Art Center, and in galleries and on street corners. He is a 2021 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow and has also received fellowships form Open Society Foundations and United States Artists. Artnet.com highlighted his 2019 performance, Slave Rebellion Reenactment, as one of the most important artworks of the decade.
