Former NBA star Elliot Perry and his wife Kimberly have built one of the most compelling private collections of African American and diasporic art in the United States. Featuring works by Kerry James Marshall, Carrie Mae Weems, and Titus Kaphar, their collection embodies a belief in art’s power to spark dialogue and preserve cultural memory. From their Memphis base, the Perrys exemplify purposeful collecting, showing how cultural stewardship can be as enduring as athletic achievement. In conversation with curator Kimberli Gant and art advisor Gardy St. Fleur, Elliot Perry reflected on legacy, vision, and expanding the canon.
After graduating from the University of Memphis,&nbsp;Elliot Perry&nbsp;was drafted in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers and went on to play for 10 years. Today, Perry works for foundations that support educational and mentorship opportunities for underserved communities in his native Memphis. Perry and his wife are avid art collectors and have amassed one of the top contemporary collections of African American and African art in the country. 
Saint Fleur&nbsp;is a fine art research, management, and advisory firm based in New York and Paris. It assists clients, including multiple NBA players, in building purposeful collections.
Kimberli Gant&nbsp;is the curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. She has curated numerous exhibitions, including ‘Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys’ (2024) and ‘Spike Lee: Creative Sources’ (2023). Gant received her PhD in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin (2017) and an MA in Art History from Columbia University (2009).
