Editors’ picks: Five exhibitions to see in May

<p>Every six weeks, members of Art Basel’s Editorial team pick their favorite exhibitions across the globe. Here are five shows not to miss in May.</p>

Until June 12</strong></p>
<p>This retrospective, enriched with unpublished research, pays tribute to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/11424/Germaine-Richier" target="_blank">Germaine Richier</a>&nbsp;through&nbsp;nearly 200 of her&nbsp;works –&nbsp;including sculptures, engravings, and drawings. Trained in the tradition of Auguste Rodin and Antoine Bourdelle, and known as the first female sculptor exhibited at France’s&nbsp;National Museum of Modern Art in 1956, the French artist now occupies a central position in the history of Modern sculpture. The exhibition chronologically traces Richier’s artistic trajectory,&nbsp;from her beginnings in the 1930s to her premature death in 1959.&nbsp;It offers a fresh perspective on an artist who left her mark on art history with her haunting works, often depicting human figures and addressing the trauma of war. <p><strong>Jagdeep Raina<br>
‘Towards the valley’<br>

<p>In this subtle show, Canadian artist Jagdeep Raina presents recent embroideries, quilts, and works on paper. Born in Canada, Raina is of Kashmiri heritage; his family fled the mountainous region of South Asia in the 1960s due to political instability. Kashmir remains strongly associated with the textile industry and in particular the precious wool of the cashmere goat, which has been used for luxury accessories in France since the late 1700s. In his textured, dreamlike compositions, Raina explores both the orientalist fantasies that have contributed to the popularity of the fabric and the family memories he associates with textiles. K. ‘The Coalman’ and ‘In Search of the Heptahedron’<br>

<p><a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/8223/Sa%C3%A2dane-Afif" target="_blank">Saâdane Afif</a> mounts two exhibitions that continue his ongoing explorations of <em>The Heptahedron</em>
(2018), a theater play by Thomas Clerc, commissioned by the artist himself. Here, 97 gorgeously carved objects in graphite and coal sit on a shelf wrapping around three purple walls; other elements (including a graphite-laced cocktail served on opening night) continue the mysterious coal-based narrative. In Mehdi Chouakri’s second Berlin&nbsp;location, Afif dives into other parts of the story: His <em>Curator’s Boards</em> (2023), magnetic pictorial assemblages, outline all seven of the play’s characters, and angular chair sculptures act as parts of the elusive heptahedron. <p><a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/artist/7323/Lucia-Koch" target="_blank">Lúcia Koch</a>’s first exhibition with <strong><a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1513/carlier-gebauer" target="_blank">carlier | gebauer</a></strong> in Berlin showcases the Brazilian artist’s talent for manipulating light and space. Particularly noteworthy is an intervention on the gallery’s vaulted windows, where Koch’s replication of their form makes it seem as though&nbsp;the ceiling is gracefully collapsing. Additionally, new works from her ‘Fundos’ series are on view. Here photographs of the inside of commonplace boxes are blown up, conveying an eerie sense of both familiarity and strangeness through her careful manipulation of light and perspective. A.R. </p>

‘La forme rêvée d'une forme vue’<br>

<p>A face emerging from the shadows, a body under water, a blinding sky: Looking at Christine Safa’s oil paintings, memories arise easily. In her exhibition ‘La forme rêvée d'une forme vue’, the French-Libanese artist invites us to step into a Mediterranean universe saturated with shimmering colors. In recent works, the lines of a body blend with the horizon (<em>Nathan, Venise</em>, 2023), shimmering water responds to the ardor of a gaze (<em>Pays rêvé, pays réel</em>, 2022). To create these poetic images, the artist grinds her own colors and prepares the canvas following a precise technical process, adding to their meditative mood. The inner landscapes of Christine Safa take you on a one-way trip to a world filled with warmth, emotion, and contemplation. J.A.</p><hr>
