<p>Filmmakers Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca don’t portray their subjects. Instead, the Brazilian-German duo invites them to collaborate on presenting a version of themselves that is at once real and acted. Their best-known work,&nbsp;<em>Swingerra</em> (2019) – which is currently on view at Kunsthall Stavanger and the MEP in Paris – features competing groups of dancers in Northern Brazil. Flamboyant yet intimate, the two-channel video installation stages a young generation of Brazilians turning traditions into self-affirmation – and a Queer community constantly under threat in contemporary Brazil. The push and pull between documentary and fiction reflects the artists’ background: Bárbara Wagner comes from journalism, Benjamin de Burca, the visual art. Together, they have become the caretakers of stories too often brushed aside. In this new episode of Art Basel’s ongoing video series ‘Meet the artists’, they discuss how art can, they say, ‘allow people to see the world again’.</p><p>‘Swingerra’ is on show at&nbsp;<a href="https://kunsthallstavanger.no/en/exhibitions/upcoming-swinguerra" target="_blank">Kunsthall Stavanger</a>, Norway, until January 9, 2022, and at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mep-fr.org/en/event/barbara-wagner-benjamin-de-burca-en/" target="_blank">MEP</a> in Paris until January 16, 2022. </p><p>Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca are represented&nbsp;<a href="https://www.artbasel.com/catalog/gallery/1125/Fortes-D-Aloia-Gabriel" target="_blank">Fortes D'Aloia &amp; Gabriel&nbsp;</a>(São Paulo / Rio de Janeiro).</p>
