Premiere artist talk: Nil Yalter

Art Basel Paris 2024, October 17

Nil Yalter, Artist, Paris
Coline Milliard, Executive Editor, Art Basel

The recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2024 Venice Biennale, Nil Yalter is a rebellious artist. From her participation in May ‘68, then in the second feminist wave and its sexual liberation, to her work denouncing the plight of immigrants in the West, Yalter gives a voice to those who have none. This conversation traces the evolution of an artist whose multifarious practice is finally getting the attention it deserves.

A pioneering feminist video artist, Nil Yalter was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement by the Venice Biennale in 2024. Her research-based practice gives a platform to socially marginalized groups and questions grand historical narratives using photography, video, drawing, and text. From her participation in the first international video art exhibition in France at Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris (1974) to recent retrospectives at MAC Val (2019), Museum Ludwig (2019), and the Hessel Museum of Art (2019), she has been at the forefront of socially engaged practice.

Coline Milliard is Executive Editor at Art Basel, where she oversees the editorial strategy and implementation, as well as the Conversation program worldwide. Over the last 15 years, she has held several senior editorial positions including at artnet News and Garage Magazine and has written extensively about art across all sections of the market. Coline has lectured at London’s Royal College of Art and Chelsea College of Arts and holds post-graduate degrees from the Royal College of Art and the Sorbonne in Paris.

The Art Basel Paris 2024 Conversations program is curated by Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou.
