It is a defining work from the mid-career of one of Latin America’s most innovative artists. A leading proponent in Concrete art, the Argentinian Espinosa (1912-2006) embraced variation as a true method of exploring and understanding form. This iconic painting shows how Espinosa's work took on a far more definitive form, with kinetic and spatial effects, from the mid-sixties. Painted in oil and charged with luminous opticality, Espinosa constructs expanding and contracting squares that cover the surface of the canvas. The effect is compelling; the apparent disorder of the squares as they throb and bend to crowd each other out is countered by a rigorous composition and the subdued yet ambitious contrast of colours. At this point in his career, Espinosa's philosophy was fully formed and it is works such as this that cemented his status as one of the leading figures in the Golden Age of Latin-American Constructive Art.
