Signed lower right. Botero's own pictorial language emerged around 1964. It is characterized by voluminous, rounded forms, painted with smooth, almost invisible brushstrokes, puffing up to an exaggerated size human figures, and objects of all kinds, celebrating the life within them while mocking their role in the world. The subjects of his paintings often appear as though posed for a photograph, capturing their image and persona in complete stillness. The present painting could be a reminiscence of Botero's childhood. His father was an itinerant salesman, who rode through the country on horseback, selling his wares. He died when Fernando was four years old.
