They are the accumulation of components that no longer add up to shelter, or the remains of demolition and its social and emotional impact. Living in a city of constant rapid development, Song Dong’s re-used materials speak of the values of those distinct ideas ‘home’ and ‘real estate’. Song Dong has for several decades been a leading practitioner in contemporary Chinese art, working across sculpture and installations, performance, video and photography. His works examine the experience of living in modern China, an environment of immense cultural and physical change. Song Dong was born in 1966 in Beijing, Chin, where he continues to live and work. He has held solo exhibitions at Baró, Sao Paulo, 2014; Burchfield Penny Art Center, Buffalo State College, State University of New York, 2013; 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney, 2013; Barbican Art Gallery, London, 2012; Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, 2011; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2009 among many others.
