Pavlovsk Palace, an 18th-century Russian Imperial residence near St. Petersburg, is now a Russian state museum and park. This new series of photographs was taken last year during a ten day shoot in St. Petersburg and will be the focus of a major solo exhibition at The Hermitage Museum from June to September 2015. The series also features images of The Hermitage, Yusopov Palace, Mariinsky Theatre and Catherine Palace. Produced using only natural light with a long exposure and untouched by digital alteration, Höfer’s photographs couple a rare intimacy with monumentality of scale. A member of the Düsseldorf School (Kunstakademie Düsseldorf), Höfer was a noted pupil of Bernd and Hilla Becher.
