Gao Weigang Added Value, 2013 Oil on canvas, paper, glass 120 x 100 x 8 cm In 2011, Hong Kong Art Fair set up a new section “Art Future”, with an award to encourage worldwide emerging artists to be more involved into art activities. Gao Weigang, the artist from Beijing, won the first prize and award. Since then, however, the artist has been puzzled by the frequency of the press reports, and more importantly, he has realized the subtle relationship between economic factors and artistic currency, therefore he reproduced that scene of prize-giving on the canvas, and fixed on the original diploma, to sell this award in 2013 Art Basel Hong Kong. The artist uses a sarcastic way to rehearsal a production of the award including its mode of operation and influence, hoping he could complete a circulation of manufacture, promotion and sales in this materialistic place. At that moment, all the participants are the players. And the director, is the money.
