Between 1973 and '76, the painter, photographer, video, object and body artist Birgit Jürgenssen (1949 - 2003, Vienna) created a body of works comprised of shoe objects and shoe drawings. The "Foot Canker" proofs her as an extremely gifted and virtuoso draftswoman. She plays with linguistic as well as visual codes and "in taking the fetish object—the shoe—as her literal subject, Jürgenssen succeeded in accomplishing several impressive tasks.
