André Kertész Sur le Quai, Paris, 1931 Gelatin silver print Kertész’s Parisian street scenes attracted a great deal of attention, and in 1927 he had his first show at the avant-garde gallery Au Sacre du Printemps. The early works he created in Paris convey the vision of a maturing practitioner gaining a sense of authorship. Through the inherent characteristics of photography, Kertész had the tools to make the mundane beautiful. Shortly after, in 1928, he switched to the Leica camera in response to the rapidity of urban life.
