Mithu Sen Falling upwards, 2015 Shadow drawings (mixed media drawings on paper and engraving on plexi glasses) Set of 6 Each: 18,5 x 12,5 inches (Shown here is one panel from the set) Mithu Sen makes delicate yet provocative drawings detailing amalgams of human, animal and plant life. The creatures and forms that emerge in this series speak of an inner world- a meeting between the psychological and the physical realms. Sen’s recent drawings centre on the space between utterance and comprehension, the void between language and meaning, the presence and absence of the line. The drawings are composed of numerous layers of graphite and watercolour on paper, which is covered by hand etched Plexiglas. Light is also harnessed as a material, as it is designed to gradually dim and re-light to cast a shadow line onto the page. This mechanism produces an ephemeral mark that temporarily completes the picture, before it disappears from your external vision but can be recalled by the mind’s eye. Sen manipulates shadow and light to test the limits of materiality and pushes her drawings into the space of immateriality and transience.
