Wols, originally trained as a photographer, emigrated to France in 1932. In 1939, he was interned by the Vichy regime at Camp Les Milles in Aix-en-Provence for 14 months. After his release the following year, he married Gréty Dabija. They were constantly hiding from the occupational forces and the Vichy and Wols increasingly drank to cope with the danger. His works from that time are clearly influenced by surrealism, featuring motifs between dream and reality. Asked what they mean, the artist answered: "Having trouble understanding my drawings? … feel them … Neither analyses nor explanations please!“ Wols is considered one of the leading protagonists of post-war avantgarde.
