Herbert Hinteregger Untitled (Garnish Point), 2011/2014 Ball pen ink and tape on canvas 200 x 150 cm Since the mid 1990s, Herbert Hinteregger (born in 1970) has been concerned with developing a specific vocabulary of geometrical abstraction. Whereas in earlier paintings and installations he often used grid structures and worked with breaks, shifts and superimpositions, he now mostly conceives stripe pictures. Whereas Hinteregger experiments with various materials like primer, sandpaper or wood, and different supports such as raw linen, denim or coloured fabric, since the beginning of his work ballpoint pen ink has been the dominant material used. In a long and slow process, the ink dripped from thousands of BIC ballpoint pens is applied to the support with an amazing exactitude. In this way temporality becomes an important factor in his work. The resulting hard-edge paintings reveal through their dense paint application not only relief structures but also a unique iridescent surface that make apparent subtle variations in hue and plays with light and shadow. Herbert Hinteregger's works have been on view at 21er Haus, Belvedere, Vienna (2014), Vasarély Museum, Budapest (2013), the Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck (2012), Neue Galerie, Graz (2005), Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna (2005), The Work Space, New York (2002) and have since 1999 been regularly on show at Georg Kargl Fine Arts, Vienna. His works are present in numerous private collections in Austria and abroad and are represented in public collections, as the Tyrolian Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna, or the EVN collection.
