Thomas Locher There is no such thing as communication #1, 2004 Photograph, foil, acrylic glass 80 x 100 x 12 cm Thomas Locher (born in 1956), a pioneering German artist in the realm of neo-conceptual art, achieved international renown for his spatial text works and installations. Since the end of the 1980s Thomas Locher's work has revolved around language and communication, around society and human action. For "THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS COMMUNICATION #1" Locher has conjoinedly mounted black-and-white photographs of standardized, mass-produced furniture, workplaces, open-plan offices, conference rooms, and lecture halls taken from architectural and design magazines. The photographs are not tied to the aesthetic of any given period but are meant to record a timeless structure of systems of communication and to make apparent generally accepted principles and norms. Locher's aim is to critically explore the political implications inherent in the structure of language and show their impact on communities and human behaviour. Thomas Locher has exhibited his work around the world: Secession Vienna (2013), ZKM Karlsruhe (2012), Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (2012), Kunstpalais Erlangen (2012), Kunstverein Heilbronn (2007), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2006). Locher’s works are today included in important public collections such as the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Vancouver Art Gallery, Grafische Sammlung Albertina, and Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Locher will participate in the upcoming group exhibition covering international artistic practice around 1990 at Mumok Vienna (Oktober 2015 - January 2016).
