Andreas Fogarasi Roof Study 3, 2014 Copper, book binder's cloth (grey) 25 x 40,5 x 2,5 cm Andreas Fogarasi (born in 1977) is concerned with spatial interventions, objects, typographic studies and architectural analyses about the factors involved in how cultural entities become images. Fogarasi's "Roof Studies" developed out of a public project to be realised at Freyung, one of Vienna's architectonically beautiful squares that is undermined by an underground parking. As canopy for the descending flight of stairs, Fogarasi's roof tops cite the modern archetype of a folded plate and serve as homage to 1950s architecture. The materiality and surface aesthetic being crucial for the artist, his use of aluminium or copper in this case reminds of sacred and representational buildings in the public space. Andreas Fogarasi was awarded the Golden Lion in 2007 for his contribution to the Hungarian Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale. He took part in numerous important exhibitions, including Manifesta 4, Frankfurt/Main (2002), and the Sixth International Armenian Biennial. Recently his works have been on view in solo exhibitions at MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles (with Oscar Tuazon, 2014), Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig (2014), Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zürich (2014), Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art, Toronto (2012), Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid (2011), CAAC, Sevilla (2011), Ludwig Forum Aachen, (2010), MAK, Vienna (2008), Ernst Múzeum, Budapest (2008), Grazer Kunstverein (2008, 2005). His works are in several collections such as Reina Sofia, Madrid; MAK, Vienna; CAAC, Sevilla; Belvedere, Vienna; Ludwig Museum, Budapest.
