Installation
Spencer Finch’s installation Light in an Empty Room (Studio at Night) precisely re-creates the subtle play of light and shadow projected through the windows of the artist’s studio onto the walls at night when the interior lights are turned off. This complex arrangement of light is generated by a range of streetlights, safety lights, automobile headlights, crossing lights and a traffic light located outside his studio in the industrial Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn. The artist re-creates these phenomena with the simplest means, using lights of various color and intensity suspended at different heights from the ceiling, some static and some in constant motion.
