The American photographer Francesca Woodman (1958, Boulder, CO – 1981, New York, NY) was long regarded as an insider tip. This understanding changed with the comprehensive retrospective of her work shown first at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2011 and after at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 2012. Woodman`s self-staging proves her extensive familiarity with the formal and iconographic traditions of art history. Using selected props and meticulously composing her pictorial arrangements, she evokes associations with classical mythological subjects, the visual language of Surrealism, and the works of earlier artists like Claude Cahun. Francesca Woodman`s intimate photographs unfold a sensual world of a psychological experience that is now an inspiration for numerous contemporary artists.
