In Pastoral Music I, the artist created a composition and an accompanying music score: the composition is intended to be projected into the battlefield through loudspeakers, as means of staging deception and inducing fear in the enemy. Pastoral Music I is inspired by the sonic strategies used by the American “23rd Headquarters Special Troops” during the Second World War: a special troop of musicians & sound artists recorded the sounds of tanks and infantry units, and projected them back into the battlefield to create “phony armies” that could be heard from up to 15 miles away.
