The artist visited the remaining relics of the “Gin Drinker’s Line,” which consisted of abandoned bunkers, tunnels, gun batteries and pillboxes, and record himself singing the Cantonese nursery rhyme Of Forests and Pastures inside of these highly reverberant concrete structures. The Gin Drinker’s Line is a British defensive system in Hong Kong that ran across the New Territories, which was constructed between 1936 to 1938. Once labeled the “Maginot of the East” for its supposedly superior defensive robustness, the Gin Drinkers Line fell to the Japanese in just 12 hours during WW2.
