Seeding Machine is a primitive, almost industrial artwork, an agricultural device that has been through an imaginary life of many changes and repairs. The scars of these repairs are what distinguish the object, and what make it into an artwork. It is as if the act of sculpting the machine has made Seeding Machine into a sculpture. The work draws inspiration from rudimentary machineries as well as from early 20th century abstract sculptures like those by Julio Gonzales. Seeding Machine is part of Atelier Van Lieshout’s ongoing series New Tribal Labyrinth. New Tribal Labyrinth presents a vision of a future yet primitive world, a society inhabited by imaginary tribes where ethics will be of little importance. This world will see a return to farming and industry, to rituals and rites. Seeding Machine is strongly related to earlier works from the series, like A Strong Plow and Everyone’s Plough. Like Seeding Machine, these are rudimentary, primitive tools, created with crude and simple materials.
