Ballerina with Violin is an example of the artist's strategy of using celebrated works of history and their perception to reveal parallel themes and issues that persist in contemporary culture. Ballerina with Violin (Giselle) references the French ballet Giselle, first presented by the Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique in Paris in 1841. The music printed on the sculpture’s globe head is a score from this piece.
