The work "Im Uhrmacherladen" (In the watchmaker's shop) by Gabriele Münter was created in 1916 in exile in Stockholm, where the artist lived since early 1915. She left Germany together with Kandinsky, however, he returned to Russia. There is hardly another painting by Münters in which the aspect of time is as palpably expressed as in the present work, illustrated by the numerous clocks. For Münter, eagerly waiting for Kandinsky's return, time, which was passing much too slowly, played a life determining role. The importance of the painting for the artist herself becomes even more evident by the fact that she later created a drypoint etching, in which she not only took up the motif again, but transferred the unaltered composition of the painting to the etching.
