On August 31 1935, Schlemmer wrote in his diary, next to a sketch of the painting: "...the 4 Women; as long as they are before a light background / strong silhouette effect. Adding yellow to the background makes the formerly dark shadow-heads light. Great appeal due to the effect of planes."
