Poliakoff created the painting in 1968, one year before his death. He interlocks asymmetric colour planes and sets them into a tense relation to each other, so that for the viewer, a face emerges. The quality of colour is always the defining factor in the paintings of this Russian/French artist, who achieved the abstraction of colour under the influence of his friends Robert Delaunay and Otto Freundlich in Paris.
