Signed and dated lower centre. Dedicated 'for SUSAN' on the lower left edge. Richter’s abstract works are remarkable for the illusion of space that often develops, ironically, out of incidental processes: an accumulation of spontaneous, reactive gestures of adding, moving, and subtracting paint. The paintings evolve in stages, based on his responses to the picture’s progress: the incidental details and patterns that emerge.
