In 1987, Tomatsu moved near the beach in Chiba Prefecture and started to take photographs of plastic articles washed ashore. The composition adopted in the “Plastics” series is reminiscent of his 1960s work “Asphalt,” in which the artist traced the imprints of human activity – and time itself – on asphalt. In these plastics, Tomatsu captures the vestiges of material civilization.
