Kitadai enrolled at the Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical School (currently the Faculty of Engineering, Ehime University) in 1939 and had illustrated a keen interest towards the field of Metallurgy. At a group exhibition in 1948, he presented a mobile sculpture inspired by the drawings of Alexander Calder which he had previously encountered in a magazine and has ever since produced related works appropriating his knowledge and techniques of engineering. This is a valuable existing mobile work that was created after the release of his An Introduction to Model Aircrafts, published in 1976 as a result of the various activities he had engaged in over the years.
