Tobias Pils’s installation consists of 18 paintings of various sizes, which, much like a puzzle, fit together to form the walls of a walk-in room. Fragments of floral and crystalline forms, body parts and whole figures, abstract geometric spaces, and black-and-white planes strike the viewer like memories flitting past – like a landscape viewed from a moving train. With this installation Pils deconstructs the individual picture to create a unified physical, psychic pictorial and spatial experience. The paintings are not meant to be read in sequence like a film, but in their totality produce a shimmering freeze frame – a collaged composition that fits together to form a whole quite by chance.
