JUDY LEDGERWOOD (b.1959, Brazil, Indiana) challenges the traditions of Modernist and abstract painting through the use of vivid color and recurring, decorative patterns. Harnessing these tools to produce often-large paintings and works on paper, Ledgerwood shatters standard optics and perceptions of physical space. She received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1984 and a BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati in 1982. Notable exhibitions include the Smart Museum, Chicago; the Graham Foundation for the Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Chicago; Hausler Contemporary Munch, Germany; and The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. Ledgerwood’s work is also represented in public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art; and the Milwaukee Museum of Art.
