To create Reise ohne Ankunft (Mercier) (meaning ‘journey without arrival’ in English), Kwade has dismantled and reassembled a bicycle, bending each element to form a perfect circle. As if caught between dimensions, the new object is at once surreal and surprising, which calls attention to its seemingly impossible form. The sculpture represents a never-ending journey, much like the ancient symbol Ouroboros, which depicts a serpent eating its own tail.
