Malpertuis is a sculpture series of public lamps of the type used to light streets in the early 19th century. One lamp from this series illuminates Collins Park every night for eight hours through the power of luminescence. The sculpture is constructed of fluorescent resin that absorbs light during the day and releases the power of fluorescence at night, revealing the lamp’s ghostly character and strongest features: the powerful expansion and reverberation of light. As a multimedia artist, Wagner Malta Tavares utilizes photography, drawing, performance and installation to manifest his poetics, bringing to the surface the fundamental relationship between people and things.
