Jesus presents a metaphorically complex work in sandblasted concrete and painted cast bronze. This ‘assisted’ readymade sculpture began with a commercially produced garden statue that the artist has scoured and defaced through sandblasting, thus disfiguring the smooth surface of the original, exposing the raw, aggregate-choked interior. Atop this partially corroded religious icon, the artist has placed perfectly rendered cast bronze avocado pieces and parts. The surrealistic incongruity of the eternally perfect avocado is contrasted with the hyper-corroded concrete, simultaneously accelerating and arresting time, and melding elements of the sacred and profane.
