With The Protectors, his new series of bronze sculptures, William J. O’Brien explores the role of personal and public memorials in shaping our individual and collective identities. The sculptures are inspired by the powerful imagery of the Mahakala, a deity from Tibetan Buddhism. For O’Brien, this work represents the will to find inner peace while coping with broader societal challenges. In shifting between internal and external struggle, O’Brien creates a public monument that connects with individual experience and offers a more potent opportunity for personal reflection and meditation. The Protectors is O’Brien’s first body of work created in bronze, continuing his ongoing experimentation with material and the totemic qualities of sculpture.
