The Arabic word “adhān” is the muezzin's call to prayer. The film Adhān is influenced by Haroon Mirza's long research into music in Pakistani culture. The film presents a chamber concert of sorts: Cat Stevens's song “Father and Son,” shown on TV, is accompanied by the live music of a cellist and the rhythmic sounds of lamps switching on and off, their wave frequency made audible via a transistor radio. Inaudible, in contrast, is the enlightened, silent cry of a man who assumes the pose of a muezzin.
