Work on Paper
Hand-painted carborundum relief on paper; Edition of 30
This Kabinett features new limited edition hand-painted carborundum reliefs and sugar-lift aquatints by British artist Sir Howard Hodgkin. These prints have a spontaneity that belies their lifelong gestation. The gestures have synaesthetic qualities, a color that evokes a touch, a brush-mark that conjures up a taste or an aroma. Grape Harvest, Fresh Fruit Crumble, Coast and Ice Cream hint at memories of days by the sea and meals shared with friends. Hodgkin is one of Britain’s most important painters and printmakers. He was born in London in 1932, where he still lives and works, though he also spends much of the year in India. In 1985, he won the Turner Prize and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale. In 1992, he was knighted for his services to the arts, and his work has been the subject of numerous major retrospectives around the world.
