EL Esplendor Geométrico is a series of 12 collages, which incorporate color into the work of Carlos Amorales for the first time. Based on small color paper compositions enlarged into interlocking panels, these wooden silkscreen paintings present collage not as a technique per se, but as an action. Collage here is a tool for constructing meaning, a tool to interrogate the relationship between form and content, a tool that indeed harks back to the time of Dada. Influenced by a visit to Jean Arp’s studio and his own affinity for Dadaism, Amorales is intrigued by the problem of form and content as political entities. As an artist who finds himself often confronting the political questions of ‘where do we find ourselves now, what do we face?’ Amorales approached the issue through colorful grades of abstraction. These works allude to the historical canon and the larger classical movement from figuration to abstraction while commenting on the process of the industrialization of art. A riff on the harmony between color and form, and the mixing of forms, the collages examine structural contrapositions along with the structure of ideology itself.
