The photographic medium has long been central to Andy Goldsworthy’s practice of creating work with nature. On view at Art Basel in Miami Beach is a selection of Goldsworthy’s rarely seen, early photographs from the 1970s and 1980s, which feature some of his first ephemeral pieces that demonstrate the origin of ideas and themes to which he has remained true. This Kabinett highlights the use of the artist’s own body and the physicality of his practice. Such tendencies have been an essential part of Goldsworthy’s work since the start of his career, yet have not been exhibited or written about as widely as many of his other ephemeral works. Actions such as throwing, spitting and burying himself began in the 1970s and 1980s and continue today, emphasizing an intimate and deeply physical relationship with nature.
